Hemp and CBD oil

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is an annual plant that has been valued since ancient times. Hemp leaves and flowers contain phytocannabinoids, which are responsible for the plant’s health-promoting effects. Hemp flowers contain terpenes, flavones (including kaempferol and quercetin) and vitamins: E, B1, B2, K, as well as trace amounts of phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, sodium and manganese. Hemp seeds consist of 20–25% protein (including edestin), 28–35% oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids, phytic acid, choline, trigonelline, lecithin, chlorophyll, vitamin K and tocopherols. In addition, hemp seeds are a good source of vitamin E, phosphorus, iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium. The composition of hemp oil is highly beneficial for health, as it contains 4% γ-linolenic acid (GLA), linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid, as well as an optimal ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-6 to omega-3 in the 3:1 ratio.

Hemp oil as a source of CBD

Hemp contains substances called cannabinoids, including THC and CBD. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed the beneficial pharmacological effects of cannabidiol. The THC value in the plant does not exceed 0.2% calculated on the dry matter, while cannabidiol (CBD) has no narcotic effect, which makes hemp oil safe for the body.

Another valuable product produced from hemp is hemp seed oil, which is used for food products as well as cosmetics (shampoos, ointments, tonics, skin lotions, creams, soaps and detergents).

Properties and uses of CBD hemp oil

CBD extracts, oil and essential oil exhibit several health-promoting properties:

  • anti-inflammatory,
  • analgesic (migraines, headaches, bone and muscle pain),
  • anticonvulsant,
  • calming,
  • cough suppressing,
  • antiemetic
  • antidiarrhoeal,
  • antimicrobial (against Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic, microaerophilic and anaerobic bacteria)
  • antifungal (for yeast-like fungi, moulds and dermatophytes).

What is more, some compounds found in cannabis have antiviral, antiprotozoal, antiparasitic and insect repelling properties.

CBD oil and other hemp products can prevent development of many civilisation diseases, including obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis and even cancer. They boost immunity, stimulate appetite, counteract cataracts, multiple sclerosis and Tourette’s syndrome (nervous tic disorder). Cannabis sativa extracts can be helpful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, mainly because of cannabinol they contain.

CBD oil and depression

Depression is a disease considered to be the plague of the 21st century and it affects people of all ages. Stress, nervous breakdowns, fast pace of life experienced by people every day contribute to the prevalence of this disease. CBD oil helps to fight anxiety, eliminates the effects of stress and alleviates social phobias. Numerous studies have confirmed that hemp oil has a positive impact on the human psyche. CBD increases the availability of serotonin to the brain, which improves mood and reduces anxiety. Scientists also suggest that CBD may have a beneficial effect on the activity of the hippocampus – the area of the brain responsible for, among other things, proper functioning, memory formation and cognitive functions.

CBD oil – dosage

CBD oil has very good reviews and proven effects. That is why it has found its way to many home medicine cabinets. 5%  and 10% CBD oils are available on sale. The dose is determined individually, as each organism is different and reacts differently to various substances, including CBD. Thus, it is best to start therapy with a small dose, a few drops for example. This is why manufacturers usually inform about the maximum permissible hemp oil dose.

CBD oil is sometimes called a miraculous natural medicine, because it shows effectiveness in treating epilepsy, seizures, cancer and depression.
