My journey towards functional medicine was not a conventional one. It started when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid condition. Unsatisfied with the standard medical treatment, which focused primarily on symptom management, I embarked on a journey to find a more holistic solution. This search led me to the principles of functional medicine, which resonated with my belief in treating the body as an interconnected system. Through this approach, I not only healed myself but also transformed my professional life, evolving from an economist to a functional health coach and eventually creating my own functional lifestyle medicine training program.
Functional medicine is fundamentally distinct from traditional medicine. It shifts the focus from merely combating diseases to understanding and addressing their underlying causes. This approach requires a significant paradigm shift: moving from a disease-centered view of health to a person-centered one. It underscores the importance of individual education and responsibility in health and wellness.
One of the key aspects of functional medicine is its deep connection with nature. I have always emphasized the biochemical impact that nature has on our bodies.
Activities like spending time in green spaces or grounding oneself physically can have profound effects on stress levels, hormone balance, and overall health. This connection with nature is not just spiritually fulfilling but also scientifically backed, bridging the gap between spiritual and physical well-being.
In my courses, I advocate practical nature-based tools for improving health.
Here I share 5 simple, yet effective ways to get energy and vitality from nature’s healing capacities.
- Spending time in nature – being in natural surroundings positively shifts our neurological state towards healing.
- Whole foods and nutrition – emphasizing the consumption of foods in their natural, unprocessed form to reap maximum health benefits.
- Incorporating edible wild plants – harnessing the power of wild plants and integrating them into our meals is supporting gut health and at the same time connects us with nature.
- . Natural light exposure – exposing ourselves to natural light on a regular level can significantly help in supporting circadian rhythms, improving sleep quality, and balancing hormones.
- Physical grounding – physically connecting with the earth, like hugging a tree or walking barefoot reduces stress, eliminates the harmful effects of electromagnetic fields and thus enhances overall health.
Education forms the cornerstone of functional medicine. By understanding the science behind these practices, individuals are empowered to make informed health decisions. This approach, focusing on prevention and restoration, offers a path to address chronic health issues by realigning ourselves with nature’s rhythms and wisdom.
